Searches for New Physics

Several new physics models predict that new heavy particles may exist and be produced at the LHC. For the first time, the collision energy is high enough that these particles may be so heavy that they can decay into lighter final states including W/Z/h bosons and top quarks. These models, including supersymmetry (SUSY) may provide answers to questions such as the hierarchy problem (i.e. why do the forces that we know of have such a large range of strengths?) or what is the dark matter.

Approach

  • We specialize in searching for new physics that may yield complex and hard-to-distinguish signatures characterized by jets, boosted objects, and hadronic final states.
  • By applying novel techniques for dissecting these complex final states, we are able to maximize our sensitivity to new particles that decay in these modes.
  • We employ multivariate analyses, machine learning approaches, and the use of innovative observables such as the total jet mass and jet substructure quantities.
